Zadar, Croatia 6/23/24

 Zadar, Croatia

Zadar, Croatia is the first of three ports that we will be going to in Croatia and is a new port for us. We took a tuk tuk tour that gave us an overview of the city center, the seaside, and the highlight was the "Sea Organ" and the "Greeting of the Sun".

Coning into port.

Zadar is a medieval city and surrounded by the old walls. For those who don't know (and we were one of those), a tuk tuk is a glorified golf cart and a great way to get around town. First stop - an old Venetian gate to the city.  The significance of the lion with the wings - the city peacefully surrendered and came under Venetian rule, just as in Verona Italy.

Fifi was sunbathing on her boat - under the shade. Have to keep that youthful appearance.

Next, we stopped at an old villa that is being restored and will become a museum.  It is home to the Sphinx of Zadar. The grounds need a lot of work, but the former owners were fans of Egyptian art.  It should be beautiful when restored.

The picture in the lower left is the Villa Attila the home that will be restored.  A few sights as we drove by the seashore.  Homes are quite lovely.

The Sea Organ was built by putting 35 pipes of various lengths, diameters and slopes that were fitted into the pavement by architect, Nikola Basic. The Sea Organ stretches out over 70 meters of the Zadar waterfront and when the waves go through the pipes, they produce a variety of sounds much like organ music powered by the water flow. The Sea Organ is right next to another major tourist attraction, the “Greeting to the Sun”. Greeting to the Sun is another installation of architect Nikola Basic. This stirring monument consists of 300 multi-layered glass plates that absorb solar energy during the day and create a spectacular waterfront light show just after sunset. We had to be back on the ship by 4:00 pm so we missed that.

After we visited the Sea Organ, we stayed in town to walk around and get a bite to eat, as we had a few hours before had to be back at the ship.

Zadar was a charming stop, and rather relaxing day for us.  The tuk tuk was a great decision as it was quite hot today.

On to Split, Croatia tomorrow, our 2nd time in that port.
