Jeju Island, South Korea 4/4/24
Jeju Island
Our second stop in South Korea is the “Hawaii” of Korea, Jeju Island. We headed to the UNESCO site of Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak, formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions about 5 thousand years ago. We joined Karen and Shel on this tour - Mickey and Shel climbed the peak, Karen and I toured the temple (which was totally empty), so we were able to take our time. We also scored and got to see the Haen Yeo (sea women) divers. I had just finished reading The Island of the Sea Women, so it was very interesting to actually see them and visit the museum honoring them.
This is the Bongeunsa Temple at the world heritage site that we literally had to ourselves, as all the other travelers were hiking the peak.

And we finished up a busy day with lunch, Korean style...traditional Korean cuisine, savoring delicious bulgogi or grilled fish and rice at a local restaurant.
On to Seoul South Korea tomorrow.
