Sea Days Cruising to Valparaiso Chile 1/20-22/24


So, we have been cruising in the Pacific Ocean for the past two days and will arrive at Valparaiso tomorrow, which looks to be a very interesting city and we are looking forward to some terra firma again.  As reported earlier, we have missed French Guina, Falkland Islands, and Puerto Madryn due to inclement weather that did not allow safe tendering from the ship to shore.  Unbeknown to us, it appears that our trip insurance covers this at $250 per person per port, so it seems we will be getting $1500 as reimbursement...how cool is that?   It is a very special day for our grandson, Andy.  He turns 5 today - we will be facetiming to wish him a happy birthday and see if he enjoyed the gifts, we got him before we left on this journey.  A few updates on weather and some of the sunrises and sunsets we have been experiencing on this cruise...

  Devil's Island, French Guina Welcome to Hell, at least that’s what Devil’s Island was for a hundred years.   Authored by Laurie Hardcastle Seil. First thing to know is that there are three islands here, not just one, and all three were part of the French penal colony called “Bagne de Cayenne” in French Guiana, as well as a town on the mainland called St. Laurent-du-Maroni, Maroni is the river it was located on. St. Laurent is important to note as it was the first place that the ships that carried prisoners from France would stop to offload and process the inmates. Most of the men, and all of the few women sent to French Guiana, would stay at this location to work at a logging camp. The incorrigibles and political prisoners were the ones sent out to the islands. As France was trying to populate this colony the policy was that once the prisoners had served their sentence they were then required to stay in French Guiana for the same number of years as their sentence...

Tokyo 4/14.15/24

  Tokyo, Japan  Our welcome in the port as we headed out on our first of two days in Tokyo.   A cultural tour for the day starting at the Senso-ji Temple. It is one of Tokyo's most colorful and popular temples and is a Buddhist temple dedicated to Kannon. According to the legend, a statue of Kannon was found in the river by two fishermen, and even when they put it back in the river, it always returned to them. The chief of the village recognized the statue as significant and remodeled his home into a temple for Kannon, the goddess of compassion. It is known for its curative powers of smoke that billows from the bonze urn burning incense. This temple was the busiest we have visited so far - it was mobbed, and everyone was burning incense at the urn. The temple was bombed during WWII and also partially destroyed by fire several times but was rebuilt into the current temple of today. Singapore 4/24/24

Singapore  Another welcoming committee as we disembarked the ship.  And a picture from our balcony as we arrived in port in the morning.   How we wish that we had more time in Singapore! What an amazing city!!  And such a short time here 6.5 hours but you will see we packed it in...We rented a small minivan for 10 people, and followed the advice of a fellow passenger who was from Singapore.    We started out at the Singapore Changi Airport terminal.  Mickey had been reading about what a fabulous terminal it was and how much he wanted to see it, so the group was all in.  It was a fabulous building, featuring an indoor waterfall that was magnificent.  Problem was, we got there at 9 am, and the fountain did not turn on till 11 am.  So, we had to come back later to see it in action.  It was worth the 2nd trip and thankfully it was close to the port - we cut this one close.   Our next stop was Garden's by the Bay.  I canno...
